Ramsey Island

Ramsey Islandchough.jpg (27471 bytes)An RSPB reserve, in the spring and summer the cliffs abound with seabirds, and in August seals arrive to have their pups in the autumn.  A family of porpoises inhabit the south of Ramsey Sound, they travel up and down the coast following the fish who move with the tides.  You are most likely to see porpoises in Ramsey Sound on the ebb tide.  Some years ago red deer were introduced to the island, their descendents are still there.

The island is open to visitors from Easter to the end of October (weather permitting) 7 days a week. Boats depart St Justinian's at 10.00am and 1.00pm. Returning at 1.00pm and 4.00pm. Cups of tea are available at the farmhouse near the landing stage. Bookings in advance are required as the RSPB only allow a limited number of visitors to land on Ramsey Island each day. Book at Thousand Islands Expeditions, Cross Square, St. Davids, Telephone 01437 721721.
An island warden meets each boat and gives a talk about what birds and flowers you are likely to find, then gives you a map of the footpaths.
Trips around the island are also available by either traditional fishing style boats or rigid inflatables.  Boat bookings can be made in St Davids.

Skomer Island

It's well worth a day visit to Skomer to see puffins (in season)  they arrive at around Easter time, and leave at the very begining of August, just as the seals arrive to have their pups. During May the island is carpeted with bluebells.   Landing trips depart from Martin's Haven at 10.00am, 11.00am and 12 noon. every day except Mondays.   The boat starts the return trips from 3.00pm, and shuttles to and fro until the island is empty,  the boat man will tell you what time to be back when you land.  Each boat is met by an island warden, who tells you what birds are in residence and where.  Please keep to the paths as puffins and shearwaters are burrowing birds, and you don't want to smash a nest by falling down a burrow entrance.
No refreshments are available, so take a picnic and plenty to drink.  Toilets are situated in the centre of the island beside the old farmhouse.
Trips around the island are also available at 1.00pm on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  No booking is required for the above trips which are run by the Dale Sailing Company (01646 601636)
There is also a rigid inflaitable doing trips around the island, this does need booking on (01646 601636)
